The Hierophant tarot card description

A robed teacher sits on a throne between two stone pillars, one hand raised in blessing, holding a tall staff. Two students kneel before him, and two crossed keys lie at his feet.

The pillars recall those of the High Priestess, but here knowledge is taught openly rather than kept hidden. The raised hand gives blessing; the kneeling students are learning; the crossed keys unlock understanding.

The Hierophant upright

The Hierophant is a teacher of tradition: the knowledge passed down through families, schools, rituals and institutions.

The card points to learning from a mentor, following established ways, joining a group, or marking an occasion with ceremony. Belonging and shared values matter now.

  • Love and relationships

Commitment made formal: engagement, marriage and shared values. Family traditions may play a part.

  • Finances

Conventional, well-tried approaches work best: established banks, expert advice, steady saving.

  • Career

Training, mentorship and established organisations; learning the rules of a profession.

  • Health and wellbeing

Trusted, conventional advice and routines serve you; follow a qualified professional’s guidance.

The Hierophant reversed

Reversed, you may be questioning tradition or choosing your own way, or rules may no longer serve you.

It can also warn against rigid, unexamined belief, in yourself or in an institution.

  • Love and relationships

An unconventional relationship, or tension between tradition and your own wishes.

  • Finances

    Unconventional choices; weigh them carefully.

  • Career

Rules that feel restrictive; a wish to work in your own way.

  • Health and wellbeing

Questioning a routine; if you change course, do it with qualified advice.

Health readings describe wellbeing within the tradition. They are not medical advice; for any health concern, see a doctor.

The Hierophant: one-card pull, yes or no

Drawn as a single card for a yes-or-no question, The Hierophant is usually read like this:

Upright

Yes

if you follow the proper, established way.

Reversed

Maybe

it depends on whether the rules still fit.

The Hierophant for timing

Linked with Taurus, whose Western season runs from about 20 April to 20 May. In timing it suggests things that follow a set process or a formal occasion.

These correspondences come from the Western tarot tradition, which uses the tropical zodiac. They are not part of Vedic astrology, whose signs are counted differently.

Tarot is a tool for reflection. No card fixes an outcome, and a reading is not medical, legal or financial advice. Card images: the Rider–Waite–Smith tarot, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith (1909), public domain.
