What is a Horoscope?

The word horoscope comes from the Greek *hōroskopos*, “watcher of the hour”: the sign rising at a particular moment. It is used in two ways. Strictly, a horoscope is a birth chart, the map of the sky at the moment you were born, which in India is called the Kundli. In everyday use it means a forecast: a short reading for a sign for the day, the week, the month or the year, known in Hindi as rashiphal.

A forecast is written by looking at where the planets are moving (their transits) and counting them from each of the twelve signs. When Jupiter moves into a sign, for example, it falls in a different house for each sign, and the reading for each sign describes what that placement is traditionally linked with.

Because a forecast covers everyone born under a sign, it is general by nature. It can suggest a theme for the day or a season to reflect on; a reading of your own chart can say far more.

The twelve signs

The zodiac and your sign

The zodiac is the band of sky the Sun, the Moon and the planets move through, divided into twelve signs of 30° each. Every sign has an element, a quality and a ruling planet:

  • Aries (Mesha): fire, ruled by Mars: energy, initiative, courage.

  • Taurus (Vrishabha): earth, ruled by Venus: steadiness, comfort, loyalty.

  • Gemini (Mithuna): air, ruled by Mercury: curiosity, talk, adaptability.

  • Cancer (Karka): water, ruled by the Moon: care, home, feeling.

  • Leo (Simha): fire, ruled by the Sun: warmth, pride, leadership.

  • Virgo (Kanya): earth, ruled by Mercury: precision, service, analysis.

  • Libra (Tula): air, ruled by Venus: balance, fairness, partnership.

  • Scorpio (Vrishchika): water, ruled by Mars: intensity, depth, resolve.

  • Sagittarius (Dhanu): fire, ruled by Jupiter: optimism, learning, faith.

  • Capricorn (Makara): earth, ruled by Saturn: discipline, ambition, patience.

  • Aquarius (Kumbha): air, ruled by Saturn: independence, ideals, community.

  • Pisces (Meena): water, ruled by Jupiter: compassion, imagination, devotion.

Which sign to read

Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign

You have more than one sign, and different traditions read from different ones:

Sun sign

The sign the Sun was in at birth, which depends only on your birth date. Most Western and newspaper horoscopes are arranged by Sun sign, with each sign’s usual dates shown beneath its name.

AriesTaurusGeminiCancerLeoThe Moon spends about 2½ days in each sign,so it circles the zodiac in about 27 days

Moon sign (Rashi)

The sign the Moon was in at birth. Vedic astrology gives it the central place: rashiphal, Sade Sati and chart matching are read from the Moon sign. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so you need your birth time to be sure of it; the free Kundli calculator shows yours. Stella’s daily horoscope on the home page is read from the Moon sign.

Rising sign (Lagna)

The sign rising in the east at your birth, which changes about every two hours. It is the most personal of the three, and the frame of a birth chart. Some astrologers write forecasts from the rising sign too.

Why your Vedic sign may differ

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars; Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons. The two now differ by about 24°, so many people’s Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier than their Western one.

Reading it well

Daily, weekly and yearly horoscopes

Forecasts come in different rhythms, each drawing on different planets:

  • Daily: follows the fast-moving Moon, which changes sign every two and a half days: moods, conversations and the tone of the day.

  • Weekly and monthly: add the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars: work, money, relationships and energy over a few weeks.

  • Yearly: follows the slow planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu: the larger themes and changes of a year.

  • Personal: only your own Kundli, with its dashas and transits, can speak to your life in particular.

Read a general forecast as a prompt for reflection, not an instruction: everyone born under a sign shares it, and your own chart and circumstances matter more. The readings in the explorer on this page are original samples written for this preview. Stella’s daily horoscope for all twelve Moon signs is on the home page, with a weekly, monthly and yearly one for each sign, all worked out from where the planets really are by Stella’s own Swiss Ephemeris calculations. Western general forecasts often use Sun or rising signs; Vedic forecasts often use the Moon sign. Check the method used by the author.

Will everyone in a sign have the same experience?
