What is Numerology?

Numerology (Anka Jyotisha in India) is the study of numbers as symbols. It reduces your date of birth and the letters of your name to single numbers, and reads each number for the qualities tradition gives it.

Ideas about the meaning of numbers are very old, and are often traced to Pythagoras in Greece and to the Chaldeans of ancient Babylon. In India, numerology is joined to astrology: each number from 1 to 9 is linked with one of the nine grahas, so a number carries the character of its planet.

Numerology is symbolic. It offers a vocabulary for reflecting on character, strengths and timing; it does not decide events, and no change of name or number can guarantee one.

Your numbers

The core numbers in a reading

A reading usually begins with a few numbers worked out from your birth date and your name. The calculator on this page works out the two most common ones.

Born 14 · 03 · 19921 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 292 + 9 = 111111 is a master number, so it is kept, not reduced to 2

Life Path number: from your date of birth

Add every digit of your date of birth and keep adding until one digit remains. For 15 August 1990: 1 + 5 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 33, which this calculator keeps as a master number; 14 March 1992 gives 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11, also kept.

The Life Path (also called the destiny or Bhagyank number in Indian practice) is read as the broad direction of a life: the lessons and the kind of path it tends to follow.

Indian numerologists also use the Moolank, the birth number: just the day of the month, reduced. Someone born on the 23rd has Moolank 2 + 3 = 5.

Name number: from the letters of your name

Each letter has a value from 1 to 9. In the system this page uses, A is 1, B is 2 and so on to I at 9, then J starts again at 1. The values of all the letters in a name are added and reduced.

Your name number from your full name is often called the expression or destiny number; the number from the name you use every day describes how you come across to others. The Chaldean system gives some letters different values and never assigns 9 to a letter; ask your numerologist which they use.

Master numbers: 11, 22 and 33

When a total reaches 11, 22 or 33, many numerologists stop and keep it rather than reducing further. These master numbers are read as carrying the qualities of their root number (2, 4 and 6) with added intensity. The calculator on this page keeps them at every step.

Meanings

The numbers and their planets

In Indian numerology each number is ruled by a graha, and borrows its planet’s character. These are the qualities tradition most often gives them:

  • 1, the Sun: leadership, independence, confidence.

  • 2, the Moon: sensitivity, cooperation, imagination.

  • 3, Jupiter: wisdom, expression, optimism, teaching.

  • 4, Rahu: discipline, unconventional thinking, sudden change.

  • 5, Mercury: communication, trade, curiosity, travel.

  • 6, Venus: love, beauty, comfort, responsibility to family.

  • 7, Ketu: reflection, spirituality, research, solitude.

  • 8, Saturn: patience, hard work, endurance, justice.

  • 9, Mars: courage, energy, compassion, completion.

Using it well

How numerology can help, and its limits

People turn to numerology when choosing a name for a child or a business, a date for an event, or simply to think about their own tendencies. Used well, it is a prompt for reflection:

  • Self-reflection: your Life Path and name numbers suggest strengths to build on and habits to notice.

  • Names and dates: families often weigh a name’s number alongside the traditional first syllable from the birth nakshatra.

  • A conversation starter: a numerologist can relate your numbers to your chart and your questions.

  • Caution on name changes: changing the spelling of your name, or buying a “lucky” number, guarantees nothing. Take your time, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise.

The calculator on this page works out your name and Life Path numbers exactly as described here; its interpretations are short, original reflection prompts. For a full reading, talk to an astrologer who lists numerology among their specialisations.

Good questions

A little more clarity

Which calculation method is used?

Letters A–Z repeat the values 1–9. All digits are added and reduced, preserving 11, 22 and 33 at each reduction step. Other schools use different conventions.

Does changing my name guarantee a change in luck?

No. There is no guaranteed relationship between a spelling change and a life outcome.

What is the difference between destiny and name numbers?

Here, destiny means the expression number of your full name; name number uses your everyday name. Terminology differs between traditions.
